Earthworm poo is more commonly called earthworm castings. If you are considering adding earthworm castings to your garden, give yourself a pat on the back because it is one of the best all natural fertilizers available. This all purpose fertilizer comes straight from nature, no alterations and perfect just as is. The process for creating castings is simple. Earthworms are fed rich, organic matter. After digestion, the end product is a dark organic material that plants love. In the following paragraphs we will further discuss the advantages of earthworm poo!
Advantages of Earthworm Poo
Earthworm castings is probably my favorite fertilizer. It is sometimes referred as “black gold” or “super humus” because it does wonders when added to your garden. One reason why it is so beneficial is because plants are able to access and utilize the available nutrients so easily. In other words, the worms make it so that plants need only minimal effort to obtain the nutrients and trace elements they need for vigorous growth. Here is a list of advantages:
- Earthworm castings are great for reviving old and compacted soil.
- When you add this super humus to your garden, it nourishes it by creating an environment where plants thrive.
- Earthworm poo will help your garden retain more water.
- It also releases nutrients slowly over several weeks and regulates PH nicely.
- Earthworm castings will substantially reduce the amount of fertilizer required and cannot burn your plants. Using less fertilizer means you save money!
- Improves root growth and loosens soil. Better aeration as well.
- No fowl smells. Worm castings have an odor eliminating quality.
Where to Buy Earthworm Castings
Earthworm castings can be purchased at almost any garden retail store. Here are a few of my favorite brands: Wiggle Worm, Black Gold, VermisTerra and Worm Gold Plus. All of these brands are legit and high quality. I recommend using them in all growing conditions. This includes raised beds, pots or any type of grow. Add it to any soil to enhance it greatly!
Worm Factory
I also recommend starting your own worm farm. They are super easy to manage and it will drastically reduce your food waste. We vermicompost almost all of our food scraps, and it pays! I harvest fresh castings every month. It is a never ending cycle too and the costs are all up front. Once you buy your farm and worms, you’ll be good to go. A good worm farm costs a little bit of money. But since its a one time purchase, I recommend getting a good one. You will also need to purchase worms. Uncle Jim will mail you 500 worms for $40 or you can spend $60 and get 2000 worms to get things moving faster. As long as there is enough food, your worms will continue to multiply and soon enough you will be producing worm castings on the regular. In the long run, it will save you a lot of money because you won’t have to buy as much fertilizer. Worms are awesome!
Finally, at the bottom of most worm farms is a “worm tea” collection tray with a spigot for easy draining. The worm tea is like a super fertilizer that provides an instant boost for your plants. You can use the worm tea as a foliar spray or just feed it directly to your plants. You can also purchase worm tea’s separately if you don’t have your own farm.
Earthworm Poo Conclusion
As you can see, earthworm poo has a ton of benefits for any type of grow. I recommend purchasing your own farm. This will save you a ton of money in the long run. In fact, I have had my worm farm for almost 10 years now! Furthermore, you’ll be doing society a favor by turning your food scraps into an organic fertilizer instead of sending it to the landfill.
