Growing Marijuana with Fluorescent Lights
“Can I use my fluorescent lights to grow my plants indoors?” In short, yes but many fluorescents fall short in producing high grade medicinal cannabis. Developed in the 1930’s, fluorescent lights have been around for a long time. However, technological advancements in newer models have made these lights suitable for growing cannabis from seed or clone through harvest.
Fluorescent Bulbs
Fluorescent bulbs come in a wide variety of lengths, diameters and spectrums. When compared with HID lights, fluorescents emit a lot less light. Therefore place lights 2-4 inches from the top of your canopy to provide enough light to maximize growth. New models emit cool diffused light and are offered in a number of sizes including: T2, T4, T5, T8, T9, and T12. T5 bulbs are specifically designed for plant growth and work best for growing cannabis. More powerful versions that produce up to 5000 lumens are available as well. Look for High Output (HO) and Very High Output (VHO). Both work great for growing cananbis.
If you are considering purchasing new lights, stick with brands like GE, Sylvania and Philips and avoid inexpensive bulbs from China. Have an older model? Fluorescents bulbs will blacken with age and become very ineffective. Replace bulb if needed. Also, make sure to match your ballast with the proper bulb.
Compact Fluorescents Lamps (CFL)
CFL are perfect for gardeners on a budget. They require little ventilation and are great for small area’s like a closet or a grow box. When CFL’s were first introduced, they didn’t produce enough light to effectively grow cannabis. However, newer bulbs with at least 55 watts and a reflector have made it possible. U-shaped CFL’s are the best for growing cannabis. Bulbs range from 55 to 200 watts and must be placed with a reflector. Also, CFL’s must warm up for up to 5 minutes before they come to full brightness.
